Form Follows Function: The Golden Rule of Good Design

Are you constantly running into or around your island? Does household traffic interrupt the work triangle created by the cooktop, sink and refrigerator? Is there enough space between counter tops to work comfortably and safely? Do you have adequate ventilation? Is there sufficient lighting at task areas? While most published kitchens are visually pleasing, BEWARE OF FORM WITHOUT FUNCTION!

Visually attractive Kitchens are frequently published by both consumer and trade magazines that are not functional or safe. The NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) is striving to make magazine publishers more aware of good Kitchen design. The publisher assumes that those submitting the material know what they are doing and accept it as valid. They recognize a beautiful kitchen but are not always aware of the hazards that could be caused by an unworkable design.

Good design is the foundation of a beautiful Kitchen. Without function, your beautiful kitchen can become a pain.

Because your kitchen project is a major investment that should last many years, select a Kitchen Specialist firm that employs personnel especially trained for this work, such as a CKD (Certified Kitchen Designer). A CKD is qualified to put the elements of a Kitchen together in a workable unit which requires engineering skill, knowledge and experience. The CKD has years of experience and proved technical understanding, knowledge and ability to communicate ideas during a stringent examination conducted by the Society of Certified Kitchen Designers (SCKD) through the University of Illinois. The SCKD is the licensing and certification agency of the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Do bring pictures from magazines of the aesthetic look that is pleasing to you to help convey to your designer the style and feeling you would like to realize in your new kitchen. A CKD will create your individual kitchen with your tastes and needs that is completely functional, safe AND spectacular!
