Clients wanted to turn a separate bedroom and master bath into a master suite and, in the process, remove the existing condition of having to walk through a closet to get into the bathroom. The solution was a light, open environment which still maintained some areas of privacy. The first step involved relocating an entry closet to make room for the walk-in closet at the far end of the room. A closet-organizing system was used to maximize available space there. Vanities were placed at an angle, opening up entry to the master suite. The placement of the corner tub and shower follows the lines of the vanities. This created room for a water closet, tucked between the walk-in closet and shower. A separate vanity in the water closet provides a grooming area that can be used without waking someone asleep in the bedroom. Since the bedroom and bath of this master suite are open to one another, glass block is used between the tub and shower to provide both light and privacy. The wallpaper pattern is carried from the bath into the bedroom area, and matching fabric used for the bedspread and window valance. The ultimate effect is one of continuity and openness — one that made this project a first-place winner in the 1993 National Kitchen and Bath Design Contest.
